Browser Pet Game II

22 June, 2021

Been spending 10 - 30 minutes each day adding to the browser game.

Town draft screenshot:

Some NPCS:

List so far:

  • 3 pet species
  • 3 hats
  • 3 avatars
  • 2 towns
  • 9 buildings
  • 9 NPCs
  • 2 branches of a skill tree
  • 10 items
  • 2 mini games

The mini games will be the most time-consuming item. Haven't decided on whether to use Godot or Unity yet.

I think it would be nice if I could finish Witcher 3 by next month but the game just goes on forever.

Browser Pet Game

6 May, 2021

Have started a browser game project to slowly work on this year.

The game is revolved around keeping pets, exploring the world, collecting items and leveling various skills.

Below is a concept of the profile page for the user:

Currently the planned features for a minimum version of the game:

  • 3 pet species
  • 3 hats
  • 3 avatars
  • 2 towns
  • 9 buildings
  • 9 NPCs
  • 2 branches of a skill tree
  • 10 items
  • 2 mini games

Laravel Art Portfolio

27 February, 2021

Recently got into learning modern Laravel

Made a site out of it

It's a single instance artist portfolio

Still finding Laravel to be too bulky, but hoping it's something I'll get used to

They have Lumen as the lighter framework but it seems like a filter to catch people trying to get out of Laravel only to have them realize they really do need the entirety of Laravel

And then they go back to Laravel

Godot Game

9 January, 2021

Recently I had given myself a 3-month timeframe in order to make a game.
The engine chosen was Godot, which natively uses a python-like language called GDScript.

Godot seems to be rising in popularity with its updates towards being more capable handling 3D, and it being cross-platform and free, it's starting to be more appealing towards Unity developers.

As someone who has mainly used Unity for game-related projects, I found Godot to not be too fun to work with at the end of the 3 months.
Navigating through code and scenes is messy - you can often get mixed up between what scene and scripts you have open
And while OOP is entirely possible, it's not the main intent with the scripting language, as such code ends up feeling dirty for me

Features that I enjoyed:

  • Animated sprite node - has a good UI for splicing spritesheets
  • Timers - Easy tool for timed events, would like to see Unity have this
  • Node System - There is one tree that exists for a lifecycle, and you switch out child nodes to "switch scenes"
  • UI Theming - Didn't get to customize this much but the kitchen-sink view for all elements is useful

The game itself is not complete, but has most of the features I intended it to have.

2020

2 January, 2021

Happy new year.
Here's a post of things I enjoyed in 2020.

Music
---
NANORAY - TILT
I found this on a music forum and have thoroughly enjoyed it since. It give you the feeling of an adventurous character in a futuristic city. Favorite track is DesktopBuddy.

Joji - Nectar
Maybe not an artist I want to admit to liking, but the album was too addictive. Over the course of 2 weeks I listened to it at least 6 hours a day. I'm happy that Joji has continued his music career, and has continued to refine and better this work. Favorite track is Mr. Hollywood.

Manga
---
Chainsaw Man
Absolutely unique manga. The pacing does not compare to any other, it is incredibly to the point while still giving you space to take in the characters and various moods. It tends to catch you off-guard with how ridiculous some chapters are. Recommended for people who have read a lot of manga.

Beastars
At first Beastars read like a bad fanfic - but after the early arcs, both the art and writing improves dramatically to present a very well thought-out world.

Game
---
Hylics
A claymation turn-based RPG. Though it's made in RPGMaker it doesn't play like the others. The atmosphere from the unique art style, combining both real 3D and MS Paint-like 2D, and the creative concepts like snapping fingers for attacking and the character designs makes for a very immersive game. A little short, though.

The Witness
Game by Jonathan Blow (Braid). The more hours I spend absolutely despising myself during a puzzle game, the more I know a puzzle game is good. Though all the puzzle types may seem the same, the mechanics are incredily varied, and Mr. Blow makes very good use of the 3D space.

Wunderlist
I miss Wunderlist.
